Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) systems have been recognized by cities around the world as a useful and beneficial public transport service. PBS systems are also an effective strategy to promote non-motorised transport, increase the reach of traditional public transport services, and achieve positive health outcomes through increased physical activity and improved air quality.
PBS systems are widespread across Europe and China, and other regions of the world are quickly catching up. India has yet to see the implementation of a city-wide PBS system, despite numerous local and neighborhood scale pilot initiatives across the country. However, several Indian cities are now in the advanced stages of developing large scale PBS systems. This webinar provided an overview of the lessons learnt from this process, and the particular challenges of implementing PBS systems in Indian cities. It was presented by Ashwin Prabhu, Manager - Urban Transport, EMBARQ India and Ranjana Menon, Project Associate - Urban Transport, EMBARQ India.
