New Mobility Accelerator 2016

Urban commutes are finally seeing a tremendous change thanks to young and dynamic businesses providing convenient, comfortable, reliable, safe and clean mobility options. The epitome of good transport is finally more than a vehicle, it’s a service! Personal mobility is undergoing a transformative shift globally, moving away from personal vehicles and towards models that provide people with a range of service options. Good mobility-as-a service options have the potential to slow down the growth of personal cars in Indian cities.

The New Mobility Accelerator aims to support new and innovative early stage businesses that are providing mobility-as-a-service and transforming urban transport in India.

Organized by WRI India Sustainable Cities in partnership with CIIE, and supported by Shell Foundation and Hewlett Foundation, the New Mobility Accelerator will help businesses to build a strong value proposition and enable them to access funding to scale.

WHY THE NEW MOBILITY ACCELERATOR

Cars are so 1900s! When we think of innovation since the time of Henry Ford, there is little that has changed in the way people move about in cities. In urban India, we see more cars on the roads but not enough infrastructure and planning to support this influx. Different estimates show that the number of cars in India will increase to about 35 cars per 1,000 population by 2025. This would amount to about 45–60 million cars on our roads and in some cities more than 300 cars per 1,000 population. This exponential growth will have tremendous impact on energy consumption, air pollution, road safety, parking and congestion, which many of our cities are already witnessing. As is evident, while cars are handy, more cars are not good for cities. However, more and better connected and integrated mobility options are!

WRI INDIA SUSTAINABLE CITIES EDGE

Every mobility business recognises the role regulation and government can play to build the right ecosystem and support infrastructure for cities. At WRI India Sustainable Cities, we work closely towards demystifying regulation and creating platforms for increased collaboration between entrepreneurs and city governments. Through our extensive network, we bring on board technical expertise, regulatory support, access to local authorities and finally access to a network of experts, consultants, government, and other key stakeholders.
