Even though the rapid dissemination of Bus Rapid Transit BRT systems in Latin America and Asia, little is known about land development impacts of this type of massive transportation system. Both regions are currently leading the implementation of BRT systems in the world with 56 and 35 cities respectively. This webinar discussed the results of two research projects looking at land development impacts of BRT systems in 7 cities in Latin America and 2 cities in India.
The quantitative and qualitative results of both research projects were presented in an interactive way providing participants time to ask questions at the end of each section. First, BRT stop typologies identified in Latin America (10) and India (15) were presented based on a cluster analysis using built environment characteristics and geographic information systems data. Second, factors explaining land development changes in close proximity to BRT corridors were discussed based on semi-structured interviews with key informants in Bogota (Colombia), Quito (Ecuador), Ahmedabad and Indore (India).
The research methodology applied in both research projects were discussed in order to show participants data collection techniques of built environment characteristics around BRT stops in cities where land use data is not usually available. The Low Emission Development Strategies Global Partnership and The Transport Sector Working Group are providing this webinar, presented by Erik Vergel-Tovar.
