We’ve received several insightful and meaningful entries for the Data Visualization Challenge and we are delighted to announce the shortlist. Here they are (in no particular order):
1. Akshan Ish - The visualization attempts to create a snapshot of how Indian cities look & feel like from a mobility perspective. It is a data-driven identity for different cities, which moulds various mobility factors into appropriate visual representations.
2. Tara Thiagarajan - The focus of the visualization is on two fronts, one on the traffic pace of life between big cities and small cities (titled Big Cities, Small cities) and the traffic load experienced by city dwellers in India (Where are the roads and buses most crowded).
3. Nidhi Singh - In this data visualization, there is a focus on the relativity between mode shares, accidents and such factors and how hidden connections can be discovered between them.
4. Naveena Velaga - The infographic depicts working woman’s movement in a city, which undergoes many stages such as Home, Journey, Office and Safety.
5. Pratap Vardhan - This visualization tries to answer, which are the main modes of transport in major Indian cities. Who is responsible for congestion and accidents? Does travel distance affect the choice of transport mode? And, why, where and how are emissions happening?
6. Saakshita - Does the number of accidents have anything to do with the transportation characteristics in each city?? The cities are organized according to number of accidents and the rest branches out from this organization. The overarching idea in this visualization is to see how comparing cities’ data (metros with smaller cities) leads us to some conclusions.
7. Rasagy - The visualization highlights the most preferred modes of transport. The visual form of the signature is inspired from the spokes of the wheel, commonly seen Indian temples as well as the Indian flag (apart from being integral part of every mode of transport).
8. Sudipto Ghosh - The main theme of the visualization is the imagined story of vehicle density and air quality. Whereas it is common sense that a higher number of polluting vehicles on the road, the more polluted a city is, there is a certain assumption about this that this visualization would like to question.
9. Satyam Narayan - Many cities in India are striving to achieve the objectives, which revolve around the concepts of safety, sustainability, equity, healthy living environment, better accessibility etc. However even the best cities in India have failed to achieve these objectives as they are being viewed as separate entities. This visualization hints towards opting an integrated approach to achieve all these objectives rather than solving issues related to mobility separately.
10. Gunjan Singh - Since time is often equated to money, this visualization calculates time taken for an average trip across cities and focuses on some of the perils of commuting in cities involve road accidents and health issues related to air pollution. The emission levels in fifteen cities across India and road accident fatalities give us some alarming insights.
11. Dona, Dominic and Alpana - The visualization looks at how private vehicle numbers are increasing drastically and are looked at as the benchmark of development, while public transportation is neglected.  It tries to drive home the point that if every person aims to use a private mode then the road space gets restricted and commuting time increase.
12. Anuj Vijay Kale - The visualization aims to develop a tool or a mobile application, which will inform a newcomer about the mobility situation in 15 cities and suggest possible ways to commute.
13. Shimonti Sinha - The main theme of the infographic is centred on road accidents in 4 metropolitan cities of India. It represents paved road areas, trip speeds, and deaths due to road accidents in these cities.
14. Kanica Gola - The availability of public transport within walkable distance with higher occupancy rate as compared to the private vehicles can reduce the level of congestion and hence, this visualization focuses on public transport.
