Green Power Market Development Group

Demonstrating new approaches to green power procurement

Green Power Market Development Group, launched in January 2013, is a partnership between World Resources Institute (WRI) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) that works with large commercial and industrial energy consumers in India to rapidly scale up the use of renewable energy in their overall energy consumption.

The group promotes this goal by sharing best practices and collaborating with government, technology providers and financiers to develop a stronger business case for diversifying the energy mix with clean energy. WRI, CII and corporate members work closely together to identify, evaluate and pursue renewable energy opportunities.

The group was initially convened in Bangalore, Karnataka and will focus its activities in the surrounding region.

• Over the first year of its operations, Bangalore chapter successfully facilitated projects worth 110MW (that are at various stages of completion) in Karnataka.
• Some corporate houses have used the documentation developed by GPMDG for their respective solar procurement projects.
• We have worked with large corporate houses to help define appropriate renewable energy procurement targets
• GPMDG members have influenced regulators to create stable and long term conducive policy framework for solar power deployment in Karnataka

GPMDG has been expanded to Chennai in 2014, due to the favorable policy environment, committed business community and vast untapped potential for renewable energy in Tamil Nadu.
