The second Safe Access workshop for the Station Access and Mobility Program (STAMP) discussed issues of first- and last-mile connectivity to the MG Road metro station. Workshops are based on the principles of safe access from the Safe Access Manual, developed by WRI India.
The workshop started with a short keynote speech by MLA N A Haris, who spoke of the need for efficient public transit and offered his support to the program. This was followed by a presentation by WRI India, and moderated roundtable discussions with participants. Workshop participants spoke of the need to make the MG Road area more pedestrian and cyclist friendly, and the role of clear signage in achieving this. Citizens’ groups also emphasised the need to manage traffic generated by the many schools in the area through innovative non-motorized and mass transit solutions.
Entrepreneurs gained key insights from data presented from WRI’s survey conducted at MG Road metro station. They also had the opportunity to interact with residents’ and traders’ associations, to understand local needs and present their product or service solutions.
Members of local associations participated in the workshop, including Brigade Shops and Establishments Association, Bangalore Trades Association, Barton Centre Owners Association, Commercial Street Merchants Association, Living Lavelle Residents Association, Citizens Welfare Association of Richmond Town and Langford Garden, and Active Resident Welfare Association Infantry Road.
