India's national broadcaster, Doordarshan is set to launch a new TV series on sustainable transport. With the support of the Ministry of Urban Development (MOUD), Government of India, the TV series, which will be telecast by DD News through February 2014, will discuss sustainable transport. The TV series is a part of the MOUD campaign ‘Traffic: Ab Bus Karo’ with an objective to promote sustainable transport in India. Hosted by Bollywood biggie, Rahul Bose, four capsules of an hour each will cover various aspects of Sustainable Transport. Episode one will build a case for Sustainable Transport; episode will be centered around cycling; episode three on walking and the last episode on Public Transport.
Amit Bhatt of EMBARQ India was invited as an expert panelist to talk about Cycling (Episode II). Other panelists included Sunita Narain (CSE), SK Lohia (Ex OSD – MOUD), AS Bhal (Economic Advisor, Ministry of Urban Development).
Amit shared information regarding the current state of cycling in India and also talked about challenges faced by cycling on account of non-inclusive infrastructure. He also shared the experience around Raahgiri Day and how it has demonstrated that people are willing to walk and cycle, provided we give them safe infrastructure. Mr. Lohia and Mr. Bhal talked about the national policy around promoting cycling while Sunita Narain stressed upon the need for safety of cycling facilities and infrastructure.
